BGCA Hiring Diversity Policy - Stay KindHello Parents and Guardians,

We had a parent reach out last week about one of our employees, who is non-binary, introducing themselves as they/them to a youth group. I welcome this opportunity to reiterate to our Club parents the importance we place upon inclusivity for all people associated with the Club, including youth and staff. Our Club welcomes a diverse group of Youth Development Professionals into our program who align with our hiring protocols, program requirements, and background screenings.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area as well as Boys & Girls Clubs of America  are an LGBTQ+ affirming organization, and we strive to be kind and respectful to all. Research has repeatedly shown that if we accept people as they are and show kindness and respect regardless of identifying pronouns, gender, or sexual orientation, they are less likely to suffer from mental health disorders in life.  We model that respectful approach with our employees.

It’s important you know that at the Club, any discussion of LGBTQ+ information is limited. We know each home may have a different approach and we do not intend to encroach on a parent’s ability to discuss and explain these matters in a way that is cohesive with your family’s values system. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater West Plains Area will not be teaching a curriculum about gender identity, as we feel that is the parents’ responsibility.  What has been, and continues to be our mission, is to provide a safe, fun place for kids to learn.

If you are interested in learning more about LGBTQ+ matters to have age-appropriate discussions at home with your child, we’ve provided additional resources from various perspectives below.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area remains committed to our Club youth, staff, families, and our community. I am more than willing to answer any questions you might have about this topic; please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly at [email protected].
